Entry requirements

- For both Primary and Secondary routes you will usually need a 2:2 (or above) honours degree from a UK Higher Education institution or an equivalent qualification and be deemed suitable to train to teach by the School of Education at the University of Sunderland.

You should also hold a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Science, and English Language and a range of National Curriculum subjects. If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above. We will only accept equivalencies from equivalencytesting.com.

- For School Direct Salaried route, Primary and Secondary level, you must have:

  • At least three years’ work experience. It doesn’t have to be related to education.
  • A personal statement which demonstrates evidence of teaching and academic potential.
  • Supportive academic/professional references.
  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
  • A completed medical proforma (based on DFEE Circular 8/92).
  • A pass in the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy, set by the Department for Education. This is essential before you can achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). School Direct Salaried route only.

School Direct Tuition route only

- For both Primary and Secondary level you must also have:

  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • A completed medical pro forma (based on DFEE Circular 8/92)
  • A pass on the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy, set by the Department for Education. This is essential before you can achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

- All successful applicants will be invited to an interview. Interviews start early November, so we recommend that you apply as soon as UCAS opens, in October.

- You will be assessed on your potential to learn and not your experience.

- Salaried route

If you have a degree and three or more years’ experience of work, you can choose to train as a teacher at a school instead of at a university. You’ll graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and you can choose to specialise in either Primary or Secondary teaching.

As well as receiving a salary, you won’t have to pay tuition fees, as these will be covered by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

- Tuition route

If you have a degree you can choose to train as a teacher at a school via this school led route supported by the university. You’ll graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and you can choose to specialise in either Primary or Secondary teaching.
