Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

Academic Requirements

Minimum age: 16 years

Applicants under 20 years of age:

  • A minimum of 40 credits at NCEA level 2 across four subjects (at least 12 credits in one subject), or
  • Demonstrated equivalent skills and knowledge.

Applicants aged 20 years or above:

No academic qualifications are required. Evidence to support an applicant’s ability to successfully undertake the programme with a reasonable likelihood of success may be requested.

English level

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall General or Academic score of at least 5.5 (with at least 5.0 in each band) issued within the last two years, or a qualification considered to be equivalent to the above.

Other requirements

  • Applicants submit a CV and attend an interview with the Coordinating Tutor
  • Supply two referee reports that attest to their suitability for study on the programme. The following criteria are examples of desirable attributes:
    • Genuine interest in people and the tourism industry
    • Commitment to service
    • Openness to and an interest in other cultures
    • The ability to communicate freely
  • Applicants are required to sign a declaration as to whether they have any convictions against the Law (apart from minor traffic convictions). On a case to case basis applicants might be asked to give permission for a police check.
  • The programme has aspects that require a certain level of physical strength and fitness. Applicants must be physically capable of completing all aspects of the programme, and may be asked to provide evidence.
  • Please note that the drug and alcohol restriction requirements in this programme. Applicants need to be aware they may be subject to drug and alcohol testing while enrolled on the programme.

No two weeks are the same for students enrolled in the Certificate of Adventure Tourism and Guiding.

The diverse wilderness areas of the Top of the South (and sometimes beyond) are your classroom. NMIT is located a short distance from three awesome National Parks (Kahurangi, Abel Tasman, and Nelson Lakes). While there are a number of classes on campus, you will also often be out and about

  • Rafting
  • Kayaking
  • Hiking/Tramping/Bushwalking
  • Snowboarding or skiing
  • Rock climbing
  • Canyoning
