Academic Requirements

No academic qualifications are required. Evidence to support an applicant’s ability to successfully undertake the programme with a reasonable likelihood of success may be requested.
All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall General or Academic score of at least 5.5 (with at least 5.0 in each band) issued within the last two years, or a qualification considered to be equivalent to the above.
Can you see yourself guiding visitors in adventure activities in New Zealand's beautiful wilderness?
With this programme, you’ll work closely with adventure operators to gain experience in the adventure tourism industry.
As an Adventure Tourism student, you will call the diverse wilderness areas of the Top of the South (and sometimes beyond) your classroom.
NMIT has conveniently located a short distance from three awesome National Parks (Kahurangi, Abel Tasman, and Nelson Lakes). While there are a number of classes on campus, you will also often be out and about hiking, rafting, rock climbing, sea-kayaking, skiing, snowboarding or canyoning.
First year
To complete this Diploma, most of our students pathway from the Certificate in Adventure Tourism and Guiding, and then you can pathway onto the Diploma in your second year.
If you believe you have the relevant skills and experience to pathway directly into the Diploma. Please note that entry directly onto this programme will require you to present evidence demonstrating you have the skills and knowledge that correspond to the learning in the Certificate programme.
Second year
This 120 credit Diploma is the second year of study for most students. Building upon the skills you gain in your first year, graduates from this Diploma can obtain industry tickets in most disciplines, for a career as a professional Adventure Tourism guide.
Work as an adventure tourism guide or operator, or continue with further study.
