Academic Requirements

Applicants under 20 years of age

  • NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) which must include:
    14 credits at Level 3 in each of:
    • English or Classical Studies or History or Geography or Art History or Religious Studies or Social Studies
    • Biology or Physical Education or Chemistry
  • Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing
    and
  • Numeracy - 14 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627).

Applicants aged 20 years of age or above

  • Are to have evidence of literacy, numeracy, and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience, and
  • Successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation Level 4 (Health Pathway) or equivalent. Or successful completion of the Certificate in Pre Health and Science with a minimum of 65% in CSHB301 (The Human Body) and CSMB302 (Cell and Microbial Biology), and a minimum of 70% in CSMA102 (Maths for Pre Health B).

English level

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those students whose first language is not English should have:

  • IELTS 6.5 Academic (no lower than 6.5 in speaking, reading and writing subtests and 7.0 in listening subtest).

Nurses work in both hospital and community settings.

There is a wide variety of career possibilities both nationally and internationally as a registered nurse, including medical, surgical, emergency department, mental health, public health and rural health nursing.

As an international student if you have already completed some nursing studies or work, you could be eligible for direct entry into year 2 of the nursing degree. For eligibility critieria read the box below.
