Course Information

This well established Joint Honours programme focuses on the context within which social problems arise and includes an in-depth examination of social issues and the way in which they are addressed. It also looks at how education systems develop how children and adults learn and addresses the key issues of the day by examining policies and debates in education and social care. Students therefore benefit from acquiring knowledge that allows them to analyse and understand issues from many perspectives.

This course is relevant to those who wish to enter a wide variety of careers as well as those who seek to go on to qualify as teachers. It also prepares students with the key skills for working in the social care sector. There are opportunities for volunteering and research projects throughout the course of the programme, opening several avenues for specific student development.

The programme is taught by an enthusiastic and experienced team who have substantial research and training experience in higher education.

Students develop an understanding of social welfare and care provision in areas of community development, child protection, safeguarding vulnerable adults, health promotion, mental health, substance misuse and school exclusion. This is coupled with understanding the ways in which knowledge, skills and attitudes are passed on and developed in individuals. Students will explore the theoretical underpinning of education by examining the psychology, philosophy, history and sociology of education.

This programme encourages students to consider the current climate and focus particularly on service delivery looking at how individuals, organisations and communities try to find solutions to social problems and effectively respond to social issues. This works effectively for students aspiring to be Sociology Teachers at Secondary Schools, in which case, majoring in Social Care and gaining practical experience is vital.
