Course Information

The Graduate Diploma of Counselling course provides entry level training in the discipline of counselling for graduates holding a relevant bachelors degree; or for applicants with extensive professional experience or other qualifications in counselling who are able to demonstrate their capacity to succeed in postgraduate study.

The Graduate Diploma of Counselling course provides students with opportunities to develop a range of theoretical frameworks of counselling, and the capacity to apply counselling skills to their practice with individuals, families and groups. Students will acquire an in depth understanding of the development of the profession of counselling in Australia and internationally. Students will develop skills in a range of evidence-based counselling modalities; learn to practice within an ethical framework and apply ethical decision making models to practice; and demonstrate sensitivity to all forms of cultural diversity by providing culturally safe services to a wide range of clients.

In order to develop the practical application of knowledge and skills in workplace contexts, students also undertake counselling field placements. Placements are available in a range of organisational settings and provide students with the opportunity to apply theory to counselling practice with diverse client populations; participate in small group supervision of their practice to build case conceptualisation and ethical decision making skills; and to develop their professional identity as counsellors.

The course equips graduates to work as counsellors in the public, private and community sectors providing services relating to: bereavement and loss; alcohol and other drugs; mental health; and family counselling. Graduates of the currently accredited course gain employment with their field placement agencies in allied health services, support services, community organisations and in the education sector. Some graduate students choose to further their studies by articulating into the Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy degree, or a masters course in a cognate discipline.
