Description
Biomedical Engineering combines engineering principles with medical sciences to develop cutting-edge healthcare devices. The South Australian biomedical industry is rapidly growing, and it needs a specialised and highly trained workforce at the paraprofessional qualification level.
Qualifications & Skills Covered
Topics covered include engineering practice, mathematics, digital electronics, anatomy and physiology for biomedical technologists, computer science, project management, biomedical instrumentation and microcontroller programming. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 15 core units and 2 elective units.
Course Notes
If students do not have Year 12 maths or overseas equivalent, they may wish to undertake the Diploma of Electronics and Communication Engineering prior to this Associate Degree as a package. The Diploma will provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge in maths to receive entry into the Associate Degree.
The Associate Degree in Biomedical Engineering will be taught 80% at Regency Campus and 20% at Tonsley Campus, and some classes may be held in the evening.
Students doing the package of both the Diploma and Associate Degree will undertake course units from both qualifications during the 3rd and 4th semester of the 6 semester package.

If your goal is to achieve a bachelor degree in your chosen field of study, TAFE SA offers two different types of pathway to university - a University Packaged Program or Credit Transfer.
A University Packaged Program allows you to select the course and the university you wish to study at, before commencing your studies at TAFE SA.
Credit Transfer gives you the opportunity to select your university course on completion of your TAFE SA studies.
With additional Bachelor programs becoming available, international students can choose to stay at TAFE SA for qualifications such as the Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management.

As a biomedical paraprofessional you will be installing, commissioning, testing and fault-finding biomedical equipment used in the health system. The employment opportunities for the graduates of this course are in the SA Biomedical Engineering (SA BME) department at a paraprofessional engineer level, as well as other private companies who offer biomedical engineering services to the South Australian health institutions. You will also find employment opportunities in electronics and related industries, Government, biomedical equipment and research institutions.
