Course Information

Are you interested in managing and coordinating? Are you a person that enjoys working in the tourism industry and want to move up to a more managerial position? Or are you stuck looking online for courses that could earn you well while travelling?
If you’re wanting a career in supervisory or management roles within the tourism industry then look no further! With the New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to recruit and manage staff, market new destinations or even run your own tourism business.

A number of challenges have been identified by the service sector including a shortage of people who can assist incoming international tourists with their travel and tourism requirements in areas such as accommodation, language, cultural sensitivities, identification of suitable attractions, on-going development of tourism ventures and in understanding the needs and preferred aims of this diverse clientele. New Zealand businesses also need to cater for domestic market needs and require staff able to offer expert advice and support for those venturing outside New Zealand. Suitably trained and experienced graduates will be able to offer appropriate and relevant advice to the inbound, the outbound and domestic markets. Crown believes that well designed pre-employment programmes as well as on-going and up-skilling training will lead to better outcomes for those interested in seeking careers in Travel and Tourism, and for the sector itself.

The tourism industry is performing exceptionally. It is estimated that:

The tourism directly employs 7.5 per cent of the New Zealand workforce and it has the potential to improve the economies of communities around the country.
Over 94,000 jobs are directly related to tourism - over 4% of the workforce.
Tourism spending is forecast to grow to 15.3 billion in 2023 while visitor numbers will increase by 39%. That will equate to over 4.9 million visitors a year - each one of them needing tourism and hospitality workers to cater to their needs.
NZIER projections suggest 36,000 extra full-time equivalent workers (approx. 47,000 jobs) could be required to service the visitor economy set out in Tourism 2025.

During the 40 week programme, you will be fully equipped to enter the exciting world of tourism. This course is an excellent way to take charge of your life and be in control of your future. This course will guide you but the real fun will be once you enter into a role where your heart will scream with excitement as you make that leap forward.

Our tutors are qualified and well experienced staff that are relevant and keep themselves current by attending seminars and conferences. You will also go on class visits and have guest speakers from the industry to tell you more about the industry and get you excited about working in such a bubbly and exciting industry. Every year we have a trip to an international destination which is optional, however, a great way to see the world.

On successful completion of this qualification you will have the skills and knowledge to work in senior positions in the tourism and travel industry. Roles may include tourism operations advisors, business development coordinators and trade development advisors.  You will be able to deliver, and assist in supporting the delivery of, a quality visitor experience across a range of organisations in the tourism and travel industries.  Sixty hours of ‘Real World’ work experience is included in this course.
