Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • 10 NCEA Level 1 literacy credits and 10 NCEA Level 1 numeracy credits.

or

  • NZ2660 New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying (Pre-Apprenticeship) (Level 3).

Note: If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency.

English requirements

  • If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.
  • Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.

  • If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.
  • If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the AraExamination Centre or in your home country.
  • IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
  • Overall IELTS requirements 5.5 academic: speaking 5.0, reading 5.0, writing 5.0, listening 5.0. 

Course Information

Acquire the professional skills and knowledge needed to apply for industry certification as a gasfitter.

Gasfitting involves the installation, alteration or repair of gas appliances (including fixing or unfixing gas pipes, ventilation or flues), commissioning gas appliances and ensuring their safe operation. Gasfitting also includes work on appliances fitted in ships, boats, caravans, motorhomes and other vehicles, and work on gas appliances fixed within buildings supplied by gas bottles of any size and reticulated gas supplies.

During this programme you'll gain professional skills and knowledge in how to use and maintain gasfitting hand tools and trade equipment, and how to install, secure and maintain domestic and commercial gas systems, appliances, fittings and structures.

Following best practice standards, you'll also learn essential gasfitting skills such as: gas safety and safety of environments where gas is used; Installation, testing, commissioning and maintaining gasfitting systems for residential, commercial, boat and caravan applications; identification, removal and handling of asbestos products; flashing and cladding manufacture and repair to meet building code requirements; construction of sheet metal components and welding processes; material science, trade physics, and environmentally sustainable practices; and legislative responsibilities of a licensed gasfitter.

Pathway Courses

This qualification provides one of two entry pathways into the gasfitting industry and is intended for candidates who have an apprenticeship agreement in gasfitting. It provides trainees with an opportunity to progress to being a fully credentialed tradesperson. You will need to sit relevant registration examinations to become a registered gasfitter. Further experience and study will be required to become a certifying gasfitter.

Career Opportunity

Career Opportunity

When you graduate with this qualification you can apply for registration as a gasfitter with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (registration is dependent on you meeting PGDB's requirements). Career options include working (under supervision) as a tradesperson for a private gasfitting organisation or completing the certification exam and becoming an independent contractor.
