Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in a health science/health discipline with a B average or better.
  • If you do not meet the entry criteria above, the applicant may be provisionally admitted to, and upon successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences, gain admission to the Master of Nursing. Successful completion is normally considered to be a B average in these courses.
  • Interview
    • Applicants who meet academic entry criteria may be required to attend an interview.
    • Applicants must be a New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current practising certificate.

English requirements

  • If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.
  • Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.

OR

  • If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.
  • If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the AraExamination Centre or in your home country.
  • IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
  • Overall IELTS requirements 6.0 academic: speaking 6.0, reading 6.0, writing 6.0, listening 6.0.

If you have a degree in nursing or a health-related area and you'd like to extend your knowledge and skills for advanced practice in the health sector, this qualification will extend your knowledge in the practice area in which you're already working and give you a formal qualification in recognition of your professional development.

The Master of Nursing is an applied, clinically-focused programme characterised by advanced study in nursing and health sciences.

You will develop advanced nursing knowledge, along with higher-level skills in critical analysis, constructive synthesis, and advanced practice and research within your specialty area. The programme has been specifically designed to prepare you as a nurse for advanced practice roles, including nurse practitioner and is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a 'Masters with a clinical focus, including the content for preparation for nurse prescribing'. Part of the requirement for the programme is the completion of a 90-credit thesis.

If you're completing the Master of Nursing and you intend to apply for Nurse Practitioner registration (as required by the Nursing Council of New Zealand), some specific courses must form part of your programme. Details are available on request.

* This programme includes compulsory two-day onsite workshops at the City campus for some courses.

Career Opportunity

With this qualification you can extend your knowledge in the practice area in which you're already working and gain a formal qualification in recognition of your professional development. Roles which utilise this qualification include nurse consultant, nurse educator, clinical leader, clinical nurse specialist, clinical charge nurse, health services manager and case manager/co-ordinator. If you're undertaking the nurse practitioner pathway, upon graduation you can apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand for the Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice.
