Each country will have different requirements for international students who want to study and research in their country, as does New Zealand. Therefore, if you want to study in New Zealand, you need to meet the following requirements.

Here are some requirements for studying in New Zealand that you need to know clearly if you want to study and live in this country

1. Academic requirements

You meet to meet academic requirements first if you want to be admitted to a New Zealand school. Normally, admission depends on the grade level and study program of applicants.

Usually, the academic requirement is not too difficult for international students to meet. However, international students need to achieve good learning capacity or higher. For high-ranked schools, the minimum academic requirement is 7.0 - 7.5 or above.

Please note that New Zealand's education system consists of 13 years, instead of 12 years like in Vietnam. Therefore, international students need to consider carefully when preparing to enroll.

Typically, high school graduates in Vietnam are required to take an additional year of pre-university program, to ensure enough foundation to follow the next grade level.

1.1. High school program

At this level, you only need basic English communication skills to apply for admission. If you want to receive a scholarship worth 20-50%, you must have a GPA above 7.5 and an IELTS score of at least 6.0.

1.2. Pre-University program

• Have completed Year 11 in Vietnam.

• An IELTS score of 5.0 - 5.5.

1.3. Undergraduate program

• Have completed high school education with good or excellent results in Vietnam.

• An IELTS score of 6.0 - 6.5.

1.4. Graduate program

• Have complete bachelor program in Vietnam.

• Several years of work experience.

• An ELTS score of 6.5.

In addition, some high-ranked schools or special disciplines require students to achieve an IELTS score of 7.0. Therefore, international students should search for information specifically on the official website of prestigious schools or institutions to understand the academic and English language requirements.

If you do not have enough scores required, you can undertake an English course provided by the school. This course takes place before the main course.

2. Financial requirements

This is the Embassy's mandatory requirement for all international students. Financial proof helps the Embassy see your ability to pay for all your costs of tuition and living while studying abroad in New Zealand. Therefore, you need to provide the required documents.

Please note that you need to prove your family's income as follows:

+ For courses of up to 36 weeks: it is required to prove minimum income to pay 1,250 NZD/ month.

+ For courses of more than 36 weeks: it is required to prove the minimum income to pay 15,000 NZD/year (equivalent to the cost of each academic year in New Zealand).

3. Documental requirements

To set foot in New Zealand, you need a student visa. To be eligible for a VISA approval, you must have a minimum IELTS score of 4.5.

Please note that your VISA application must consist of the following documents, including:

• Curriculum vitae

• Passport

• Academic transcript

• Letter of offer.

• Letter of acceptance of accommodation in New Zealand.

4. Health requirements

International students must meet health requirements and show to the Department of Immigration that your intention to study is serious in order to be granted a VISA and residence permit to study in New Zealand.

You must prove you have a plan to return home. You can show the Embassy a round-trip ticket, or that you have enough money to buy an air-ticket to return to Vietnam. Besides, you also need to prove the cost of living and rent.
